WASHINGTON — Reaching 36 days on Wednesday, the U.S. government shutdown is now the longest ever, with no clear end in sight.

Independent agencies were carefully designed by Congress to ensure that those charged with safeguarding critically important public interests—like workers’ rights, product safety, or household financial security—would act to serve the public good, not the president’s political needs.

UPS said in a regulatory filing that it has cut about 34,000 operational positions and closed daily operations at 93 leased and owned buildings during the first nine months of this year as part of its turnaround plan.

"It is clear that New York is facing serious and costly impacts from severe weather, and that severe weather events are increasing in frequency," DiNapoli said in the report.
