The Scaffold Safety Law is a lifeline for workers who risk their lives on the job. Here in New York, and across the country, insurers are pushing policies that boost their profits and leave taxpayers to foot the bill.

Work on the  Northern State will see the state Department of Transportation renew about 50 lane miles of asphalt in a section between Exit 33, the Wantagh State Parkway in Westbury, and the New York Avenue overpass in Melville.

The White House budget office is instructing federal agencies to prepare reduction-in-force plans for mass firings during a possible government shutdown, specifically targeting employees who work for programs that are not legally required to continue.

The investment is "huge news" for Long Island, and it will help advance the region's plans for a research corridor that connects academic institutions and helps create new startup companies, said Kevin Law, who chairs the Stony Brook University Council.

Employers also appear to have less need for college-educated workers, driven by technological change, automation and, most recently, President Trump’s cuts to federal workers and funding, which have disproportionately affected the college educated.
