Kevin Coyne, president of Brentwood's teachers union, said student poverty levels in his district are at a point where schools regularly stock food and clothing for families in need, while also providing guidance on obtaining jobs and housing.

The Nassau County Rules Committee approved the proposed lease agreement on July 22 for the Las Vegas Sands to have control of the Nassau Coliseum and its surrounding property in Uniondale.

Unionized workers are far more likely to receive various workplace benefits compared with nonunion workers. These benefits include paid leave of various types (sick, family, vacation, personal), employer-provided health care, retirement benefits, and more.

The past few years have been difficult for college and universities. Concerns about costs, results, retention, and campus conflict have damaged the prestige and standing of higher education.

Officials touted the estimated $700 million in economic benefits for Suffolk County from the project and the anticipated 800 primarily union jobs, benefits Suffolk County Executive Edward P.

“The company is pleased the planning commission approved the coliseum lease and looks forward to moving forward with a process that will provide important job security to those working at the Nassau Coliseum," Sands spokesman Ron Reese said in a statement after the vote.
