“Today we took another important step toward providing the voters the opportunity to support this measure that helps safeguard our environment and improve water quality for generations to come," Romaine said in a statement after the vote.

When COVID-19 pandemic restrictions began in 2020, many people could work from home. But those who helped maintain essential services couldn't.

Now, Babylon Village officials are planning to recognize those essential workers with a “Heroes Fountain.”

Starbucks workers in West Hempstead voted 11-10 Thursday night to unionize, the latest in the chain's Long Island locations to join a national union push at the Seattle-based coffee giant.

Ryan Stanton, executive director of the Long Island Federation of Labor, said "working people are collateral damage" because jobs at the arena are at risk without an operator.

This workplace hazard and ways to prevent fatalities are well known. Yet OSHA inspectors too frequently see excavation operations, like waterproofing foundations and installing septic and water management systems, without cave-in protections in place.
