The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has acquired property at an industrial park near Long Island Rail Road tracks in East Yaphank, taking a major step forward in plans to relocate the little-used Yaphank train station, officials said.

Perdue Farms and JBS, two of the country’s biggest meatpackers, will pay a combined $8 million after the Department of Labor found the companies relied for years on migrant children to work in their slaughterhouses.

The International Longshoremen's Association union and the U.S. Maritime Alliance of ports and shipping companies said they had reached a tentative agreement for a six-year contract, a week ahead of a Jan. 15 deadline.

The expansion would allow a flow of 160,852 gallons of wastewater per day to the county plant, according to a FEMA document found on the agency’s website. It would include the installation of 35,750 feet of low-pressure sewer mains and other equipment to connect each individual home.
