The state will pay off a more than $6 billion pandemic-era debt to the federal government that’s been a burden on employers and has blocked an increase in unemployment insurance benefits to laid-off workers, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday.

ALBANY — The State Legislature approved a restructuring of the board governing troubled Nassau University Medical Center on Wednesday, taking control from County Executive Bruce Blakeman and giving it to Gov. Kathy Hochul.

A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration, restoring nearly $1 billion in COVID-19-era education grants to New York, 15 other states and Washington, D.C.

That development came just hours after Las Vegas Sands announced on an investor call Wednesday that it would not be bidding for a New York casino license, even as it said it believed the Coliseum site "should be highly competitive in the New York casino licensing process."

John Durso, president of the Long Island Federation of Labor, representing thousands of union workers, said they "remain optimistic."
