The former facilities director for the Lawrence Union Free School District allegedly steered more than $2 million in public heating and air conditioning contracts to a company he ran with a friend, an indictment unsealed Wednesday morning in Nassau County Court states.

The proposed legislation would require school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties starting next year to enter into what’s known as a project labor agreement, or PLA, for any construction or improvement projects costing $1 million or more.

"Do not let this workforce fall further behind," said Sexton, the national vice president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, which represents LIRR train operators.

With any enormous undertaking, you have to start somewhere.

Sheree Sibilly, a mother of two Brentwood middle school students and president of the district’s special education PTA, said she’s concerned about the district losing money to charter schools and what that could mean for the district’s educational programs, especially those for special education.

The grant will help the water district, which serves about 9,400 households, provide “water that meets or exceeds any standard out there” for removing PFOA and PFOS chemicals, district superintendent Paul Prignano said in an interview.
