Nassau County's largest public employee union has approved a new contract after a six-year stalemate, advancing a deal that will boost employee wages by nearly 25% over 13 years.

The union representing 340,000 UPS workers said Tuesday that its members voted to approve the tentative contract agreement reached last month, putting a final seal on contentious labor negotiations that threatened to disrupt package deliveries for millions of businesses and households nationwide.

The union representing nurses at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown said Friday it had reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, averting a potential strike.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and leaders of the county's largest public employee union have tentatively agreed to a new contract that raises wages nearly 25% over 13 years, according to a memorandum of understanding obtained by Newsday.
