Jake Napolitano, 24, started working as a clerk at a post office in Medford last September. Napolitano believes the work to be honorable and said that the post office "creates a stronger community."

But the talk of privatization threatens "my job" and "my future," he said.

Pat Guidice, business manager for the local, said in an interview Saturday the next few days will be “critical” and it’s too early to say if the union plans a work stoppage without a new contract by the end of Friday.

“People are nervous,” said Lloyd Butler, 54, a computer specialist who has been working at Northport VA for 36 years. He described a bleaker mood at the workplace.
