A message from Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO President John Durso
Even though political action is a way of life for our labor movement and its leaders, each election brings a unique set of feelings in the aftermath of the hard work. No one can say with certainty what to expect from a Trump administration, but we are certainly getting some clues from his appointees. Based on these "experts" he has appointed to run government agencies, it is apparent that his rhetoric about being a champion for working people was just that, rhetoric. We will see constant attacks on the policies and progress we've made on behalf of working people. Here in New York, deep pocketed outside interests will try to further erode protections from working people by opening our State Constitution through a convention. That is a major ballot issue we must all fight in 2017. On Long Island,we expect several major re-development initiatives to move forward which will reshape the brick and mortar of our region for generations to come. It is our responsibility to ensure that good union jobs, with decent wages and benefits, are part of any major redevelopment plan in our communities. Our objectives for economic development must be crystal clear: we stand with people in our communities who are looking for career opportunities and a chance to build a thriving middle class. On behalf of myself and all of us at the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, we would like to wish you and yours a very Happy Holiday Season and a Healthy and Happy New Year.
