We urge your support of Workforce Development Institute’s (WDI) funding request of $7 million for the 2016-17 fiscal year. WDI is an essential resource for the Long Island Federation of Labor, the working men and women of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and the advancement of the regional and state economies.
Workforce development, support, and enrichment are key to a sustainable economy on Long Island that will continue to grow. WDI is collaborating with businesses and organized labor to address workforce development opportunities and challenges, strengthen skills and teach new ones, allowing Long Islanders and New Yorkers to get jobs, keep jobs and prepare for the new jobs that are so vital to our region’s future. Whether it’s green jobs, STEM training, patient safety, manufacturing, basic job and language skills, veterans’ training, or other initiatives to meet existing and emerging regional needs, WDI consistently responds to the challenge.
In FY 2015-16, WDI received $7 million in funding, allowing them to support many meaningful workforce development initiatives, and achieve FY 2008-09 funding levels. In a post-recession economy, WDI strengthened their ability to operate efficiently, and develop targeted strategies to respond instantly to shifts in the local and regional economies providing invaluable services and programs to employers and employees alike expanding the number of jobs and keeping good jobs in New York State.
WDI’s partnership with the Long Island Federation of Labor has delivered benefits for business, labor, and the residents in our region whom they serve. I urge you to support WDI in the 2016-17 budget.
