Newsday Letters: Supreme Court hangs in the balance

Monday, April 11, 2016

This letter appeared in the April 11th edition of Newsday.

The Supreme Court’s 4-4 vote on unions’ ability to collect dues from non-members is an important win for all unions [“Union dues upheld,” News, March 30].

Non-members reap benefits resulting from the collective bargaining that union dues pay for. This vote helps ensure that collective bargaining will continue, and that is the cornerstone of an effective union.

Of course, if a Republican wins the White House, this could be reversed with the addition of a conservative court justice. We could reverse progress regarding many other issues, such as gay rights, voting rights and women’s reproductive rights.

Elections matter. The Supreme Court matters.
