John R. Durso LI Fed President reacts to NYS Budget Agreement

Friday, April 1, 2016

We are excited to celebrate the victories achieved by the 250,00 working men and women of the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO as budget negotiations have come to a close.  The steadfast commitment to our principles and the relentless efforts of our members with the support of our community partners in this fight were integral in moving forward an increased minimum wage and Paid Family Leave.

Millions of New York State residents will now be better equipped to provide for their families, keep a roof over their heads and enhance the standard of living for some of the most economically vulnerable members of our society.  With New York State poised to be the first state in the country to reach a $15 per hour minimum wage we will show the rest of the nation a path to an economy that works for us all, and not just the wealthy few.

The days of choosing between caring for a dying family member, or nurturing a newborn baby and putting food on the table are numbered as New Yorkers will begin to qualify for Paid Family Leave. This budget deal, which also implements this ground breaking benefit, allows hard working people to take comfort in knowing they can be there for the ones they love in their time of need, and still have economic certainty.

Governor Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Flanagan and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Klein have shown leadership by coming together on these critical issues.  We can be proud that their decision to coalesce on these issues will improve the lives of working people.
