Fighting for our Community

Friday, March 3, 2017

Our Long Island labor movement is at work on many fronts to safeguard working families.  We have joined the State AFL-CIO's campaign to pass Buy American preferences in New York.  Fortunately, we've seen bipartisan support here on this issue.  It's about time our elected officials turned this campaign slogan into good public policy. At the federal level we are fighting hard to protect Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. We are going to hold the President to his commitment to preserve, grow and protect Medicare, but we are aware that his Secretary of Health and Human Services, former Rep. Tom Price, is one of the chief architects of some of the most extreme proposals to dismantle it.  Sign the petition and let Congress know you want them to keep their hands off!  Read below to learn how we are fighting to protect your health care. We also successfully challenged the nomination of Andy Puzder to run the Department of Labor.  It was thanks to the hard work of union members across the country and Long Island that we were able to defeat him with phone banks, letter writing campaigns and rallies.

Finally, we urge you to join us for the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO's Annual reception on March 14th.   Our honorees have worked tirelessly to support labor on Long Island. Patrick Dolan, Jr. President of Steamfitters Local 638, Stuart Rabinowitz, the President of Hofstra University, Rev. Charles Coverdale, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Riverhead, and Shirley Coverdale, President and CEO of the Family Community Life Center in Riverhead are all heroes of our labor movement. We have included the invitation below.
